Does a riding scale railroad make a good neighbor?

While most everyone reading this is a riding-scale railroad enthusiast, not everyone around a railroad may be as enthused about the railroad as we are. There are a few known cases of railroads that have had problems with their immediate neighbors. While most have been settled with making adjustments to their operating and work habits, at least one ended in a recent lawsuit in which the railroad was found to be in conflict with property covenants and ordered removed completely, even though it had been there longer than the neighbor had.

The following survey will be the basis for an article on problems railroads have encountered and hopefully will provide insight in how best to avoid neighbor problems.
