  Everyone Loves the Shay
Building the Shay
by Kozo Hiraoka. Published by Live Steam (div. of Village Press Inc.).
The geared locomotive construction book.
All wheels on the Shay, including those under the tender, are used for power. The Shay's vertical cylinders located on the right side of the engine, powered the unique "Crank Shaft". "Drive Shafts were attached to both ends of the crank shaft to power each axle via a gear box at each wheel. The boiler is located off center,  necessary due to the location of the cylinders.  The action of the crank/rods and shafts are truly "Mesmerizing".   Build this 1880s prototype in 3/4" 1" or 1-1/2" scale.
